Family Therapy

This form of therapy may follow or coincide with individual therapy as family sessions can be a part of this. However, for a more dynamic and overall look at what makes a family system work this can be the beginning of a true experience of discovery.

Many families may have a focused individual they want to assist as the individual may be threatening or derailing set in place family dynamics that have kept the system working for a long time. What is to be understood is that not one individual is the “culprit” of creating dysfunction… In fact many families thrive on less than helpful interactions with each other, but they have become accustomed to them that the family’s members have figured out how to navigate these interactions and make it work. Even families that seem like a well oiled machine can have their hiccups or stalling points like any system. Change, no matter for better or worse, can derail a family process and the need to regroup can be a struggle for everyone as every member has a part, even if they don’t see their’s. Family therapy helps break down this family process that is unique and personal to each family system. The therapy happens when skills identified in session are practiced in real time in the family setting and what works and what doesn’t work are identified, then are retooled if needed in the next family session.

This is not an easy or even direct process at times. Family therapy takes the commitment of those involved and patience with the therapist as small changes and realizations can take some time to get to and are not always clearly identifiable. Ultimately, the family system learns how to assess their interactions, identify if they are helpful or hinder growth and find ways to engage more productive means of communication and functioning.
